Common Cookware Mistakes That Shorten the Life of Your Pan and How to Avoid Them

Premium cookware is made to be used, not treated like a museum piece. Still, certain everyday habits can unintentionally reduce performance over time. Here’s how to keep your SCANPAN pans working beautifully for years.

1. Skipping a Proper Clean After Every Use

Leaving food or oil residue behind? That’s the #1 cause of food sticking—even on a high-quality nonstick surface.

What to do instead:

Clean and rinse your pan after every use with warm to hot soapy water and a soft sponge. For stubborn residue, a natural bristle or nylon brush with a gentle cleaner does the trick.

2. Using Aerosol Cooking Sprays

Spray oils may seem convenient, but the propellants can impair the nonstick surface over time especially if not cleaned thoroughly after every use.

Swap this for:

Your favorite traditional oil or butter for flavor and optimal release.

3. Overheating the Pan

SCANPAN nonstick cookware is designed for excellent heat distribution and retention, so high temperatures aren’t necessary for great results. Overheating can degrade performance.

Better approach:

Heat your pan on medium for about 60–90 seconds before cooking. This gets you to the perfect cooking temperature while saving energy and protecting your coating.

 4. Letting Residue Build Up Over Time

Even if things don’t look stuck, invisible oil and food particles left behind can create buildup that interferes with nonstick performance.

Quick fix:

If build-up occurs, simmer a baking soda and water paste on low heat to loosen it, then wash as usual.

5. Storing Cookware Carelessly

Scratches and scuff marks usually happen outside the kitchen—during storage.

Protect your pans by:

Placing a cloth or separator between stacked pieces so surfaces aren’t rubbing together.

Kitchen Myths We’re Not Worried About

✔ Metal utensils (SCANPAN nonstick surfaces are designed to withstand them)

✔ Rinsing with cool water after cooking (your cookware can handle real-world use)

Modern SCANPAN nonstick coatings are tough and meant for everyday cooking, not gentle handling under glass.

Great cookware isn’t delicate but good habits go a long way. Keep your pans clean, avoid sprays and unnecessary high heat, and protect them during storage. With these simple tips, your SCANPAN cookware will continue to deliver reliable performance meal after meal.
